Ursula Hertewich was born in December 1975 in Saarbrücken, Germany. She grew up with two older siblings in her parents’ pharmacy in Wadgassen. After leaving school, she studied pharmacy in Saarbrücken and qualified as a pharmacist in 1999. She then completed her PhD in pharmaceutical biology at Saarland University. A DAAD scholarship enabled her to spend six months researching in Dunedin, New Zealand in 2001. In 2002, she completed her doctorate (Dr rer. nat.) and continued to work as a lecturer in nutritional science at Saarland University. Starting in 2004, she worked in her parents’ pharmacy for two years before joining the community of the Arenberg Dominican Sisters in 2006. After her novitiate, Sr Ursula Hertewich began working in the guest house at Arenberg Abbey in 2009, first in the herb garden and then, after completing the requisite training, in pastoral care and spiritual counselling. Since 2014 she has been responsible for the training of young sisters in the community, and since 2015 she has been a member of the leadership of the order.
